The practice of body piercing is a ritual that dates back to ancient times and can be traced back as far as 4,000 to 5,000 years in certain cultures. Moreover each kind of piercing holds a significant meaning usually of a religious or spiritual context.
There is one type of body piercing that is a more modern trend and does not represent any kind of deeper meaning and that’s the navel. Belly-button piercing became popular in 1994 when supermodel Christy Turlington donned one during a runway show. Not to be outdone by her super skinny counterpart. Naomi Campbell followed conform to.
The height of the navel piercing hit an all measure sexy high when pop tart Britney Spears began shaking a pierced midsection back when her career still had a pulse in the late ’90s.
Unlike the belly add a piercing below the belt is not new. One of the most popular piercings of the male genitals is named for Prince Albert who was the husband of Queen Victoria. The Prince Albert pierces the penis from the outside of the frenulum and into the urethra.
It was said he had this piercing done prior to his marriage to the queen around 1825 at a time when a crack for ultra tight men’s trousers was starting.
Because the pants were so tight the penis needed to be held to one side or the other so as not to create an unsightly bulge. To accomplish this some men had their penis pierced to accept it to be held by a hook on the inside of the trousers. Tailors to this day will ask if you dress to the left or right.
Today most people get a piercing for sexual or esthetic purposes. I turned to my good friend. Julie Taylor for some further insights. Julie is the owner and piercer at climb Decision Piercing & Tattoo and has been putting holes in people since 1996. She’s seen it all - literally.
In her vast experience of piercing the most common one for women is a vertical clitoral cover piercing. The hood is the skin that protects the clitoris.
“Women are sometimes looking at a clitoral hood piercing as a sex toy which it certainly can be,” Julie says. “Many just love the look of jewelry along the vulva. When I show a woman her new piercing in the mirror she is always thrilled. They often say it makes them feel more sexy. For some women it can be a way of owning a part of their body they have received negative or at least conflicting messages about from society.”
“Besides advising clients on sexual safety and aftercare anatomy is also a consideration,”.
